International Superheroes of Hardcore - Takin' It Ova

En dan nu even een huiskamervraag. Wat is de overeenkomst tussen bands als Mucky Pup, NOFX en The Bloodhound Gang?...... Humor natuurlijk. Deze bands nemen het tekstueel niet altijd zo serieus en benaderen het vanuit een humoristische kant. Wie ook aan dit rijtje kan worden toegevoegd is de band International Superheroes of HardCore (ISHC) die onlangs hun eerste album Takin’ It Ova uitbrachten. Het plezier en de humor druipt er op dit album vanaf. De grappige teksten van ISHC gaan ondermeer over de graaicultuur onder superhelden zoals Spiderman en X-Men , verder worden de diverse screamo-bandjes in de zeik genomen en is men niet vies van een robbertje Hokey Pokey. Oftewel, het gaat helemaal nergens over.

ISHC is een uitstapje van de band New Found Glory en moet eigenlijk als een grap worden beschouwd. Of het ook bij een grap blijft als er miljoenen van over de toonbank gaan is maar de vraag, echter zo’n vaart zal het anno 2008 wel niet meer lopen. Als het aan mij ligt gaat men voortaan lekker verder met ISHC en blijft het niet bij één album, want het is een genot om naar dit album te luisteren. ISHC maakt lekkere onbezorgde rechttoe rechtaan hardcore die met name beinvloed is door old school New York Hardcore (NYHC). De leden van New Found Glory hebben een verleden in de NYHC- scene en willen op deze leuke manier hun roots overbrengen aan hun fans. Ik hoor flarden van Murphy’s Law, Madball en Skarhead terug in ISHC. Hoogtepunten op dit album zijn het swingende Just Like Dr. Jones, de twee snelheidsduivels Screamo Gotta Go en Superhero Sellouts en het typische Madball’s got our back.

Als toetje krijg je op dit album dan ook nog de EP Tip Of The Iceberg van New Found Glory er zomaar bij . New Found Glory maakt zelf zeer melodieuze, deels poppy hardcore-punk in de stijl van o.a. Bouncing Souls. De EP bevat een drietal nieuwe nummers van de band en drie covers. De nieuwe nummers laten horen hoe goed New Found Glory de kunst van het maken van melodieze hardcore beheerst. Ik was niet bekend met New Found Glory, maar ik moet zeggen dat de muziek goed te pruimen is. Met name het nummer If You Don't Love Me is zeer catchy en maakt me nieuwsgierig naar het volgende volledige album. Covers zijn er o.a. van Shelter (Here We Go Again) en Gorilla Biscuits (No Reason Why) en deze liggen ook lekker in het gehoor, maar zijn natuurlijk niet beter dan de originele versies.

Al met al een zeer prettige kennismaking, die naar ik hoop een voortzetting krijgt.

Understand effectiveness gerlnaley means effective in the widest range of circumstances for the greatest number of people. It does not mean will it work in a small set of circumstances.Assuming you want to stop the person from continuing the fight, Muay Thai style thigh kicks, Savate style groin kicks, Pananjakman style oblique kicks , soccer style shin kicks, and old fashioned foot stomps are all great.If you see them attacking from kicking range, a jeet tek - like a stiff leg side kick- often will break their momentum enough to let you use another attack.Because I have trained in high kicks for years, I would have no trouble kicking to the stomach or kidneys if the opportunity presented itself. I prefer Savate kicks for those. High kicks are not usually a good idea for the simple reason that it's too easy for something to go wrong.Can they be effective ? Sure. I hit a guy with a spin wheel kick to the head one time that actually picked him off the ground. Would I recommend you train for that? No way. I happened to be in the perfect position and had a lot of high kick practice at the time. When he lunged, you could say I got lucky.The kicks I listed meet my original interpretation of effective . Naturally, if you don't train realistically, it doesn't matter if you use a kick or a gun you will fail.I hope that helps you.
