Al bijna 17 jaar komt er een prettig geluid vanuit Canada tot de oren van vele bewonderaars.
De band Harem Scarem (niet te verwarren met het Focus-werkje) leverde tot nog toe een zevental albums af onder contract bij Warner Music, en gek genoeg begint de band avontuurlijk aan eigen beheer releases sinds in 2002 het album Weight Of The World verscheen, gevolgd door het in 2003 verschenen Higher.
Voor die tijd had de band zijn hoogtijdagen gevieerd met het tot nog toe meest populaire album Mood Swings, waarin de nadruk lag op solide en melodieuze rock met sterke riffs en afwisselende melodielijnen.
Anno 2006 verschijnt dan Human Nature en waar staat de band nu?
Tot in ieder geval mijn tevredenheid zijn de zangharmonieën terug van weggeweest en zijn de composities zeer eigentijds, alhoewel een duidelijk AOR stempel op deze muziek staat. De zang doet hier en daar een klein beetje aan het schorre van Bryan Adams denken, en in de muziek zelf zitten hier en daar wat nu-metal trekjes, zelfs krijg ik een kort Di-Rect visioentje, alhoewel de naam Journey ook niet uit mijn beleving te bannen is.
Vanaf het begin weet de band dan ook te imponeren met waar men sterk in is, namelijk inderdaad zeer melodieuze nummers en prima meerstemmige zanglijnen.
In Hanging On en Tomorrow May Be Gone destilleer ik mijn twee favoriete nummers van dit album, dat menig luisteraar van goed AOR zal kunnen bekoren, alsmede Harem Scarem fans van het eerste uur. Uiteraard krijgt Japan er een bonustrack bij die wij weer niet krijgen (een akoestische versie van het nummer Higher). Alhoewel dit album mij zeer aanspeekt, kan het nog niet tippen aan het fantastische Slamer album wat in 2006 mijn favoriet is geworden, onder andere vanwege het ontbreken van ontroerend goede gitaarsolo's, maar men is hard op (de goede) weg.

Prachtige CD. Nog net niet zo goed als Mood Swings, maar beter dan Voice of Reason en alles wat daarna komt. Voor mij toch de verrassing van de laatste tijd, dit album.
